TRACT 6.10.23 BE CAREFUL WITH THIS VERSE

BE CAREFUL WITH THIS VERSE
Luke 5:39 And no one, having drunk old wine, immediately desires new; for he says, ‘The old is better.’”

Be careful with this verse. It is not every verse that is dangerous in our following of Jesus. This one is tricky. Why?

It is the natural that has always come first,  not the spiritual. 

1 Corinthians 15:46
Howbeit that was not first which is spiritual, but that which is natural; and afterward that which is spiritual.

You first followed human beings (parents, friends, teachers, etc). This can be why following Jesus is hard for you. It is the natural that comes first. It can be why following your Church denomination is tending to be more than following Jesus. 

For years, I tended to follow my own thinking instead of asking the Lord. The injunction in Proverbs below didn't mean much to me. 

Prov. 3:5-7
Trust in the Lord with all your heart,
And lean not on your own understanding;
In all your ways acknowledge Him,
And He shall direct your paths.
Do not be wise in your own eyes;
Fear the Lord and depart from evil.

I was natural first before my conversion. Old habits die hard. Even praying sometimes looked like a waste of time because I had done many things before without having prayed.

That has been my undoing. The old wine has come to be part of me. This is why the first requirement of Jesus is 

 Luke 9:23 (KJV)  And he said to them all, If any man will come after me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross daily, and follow me.

This verse is best or clearer to us from the Message Bible rendering.

Luke 9:23 Then he told them what they could expect for themselves: "Anyone who intends to come with me has to let me lead. You're not in the driver's seat - I am. Don't run from suffering; embrace it. Follow me and I'll show you how.

Can you make this decision - to forget the old wine. Self has intoxicated you so far. You seemed wise in your own eyes. That was a terrible trap. Forget yourself, do like Jesus who refused to say His own word and suspended following His own plans and actions.
 
John 6:38
For I came down from heaven, not to do mine own will, but the will of him that sent me.

Can you say that you have come to this day and to this place or position to do the will of the Father? This is the greatest way of being a Christian. Let Him be the Christian in you.

Galatians 2:20 I have been crucified with Christ; it is no longer I who live, but Christ lives in me; and the life which I now live in the flesh I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave Himself for me.

 Then Christ in you is the hope of glory (Col. 1:27).
