2 Kings 4:4 (KJV) And when thou art come in, thou shalt shut the door upon thee and upon thy sons, and shalt pour out into all those vessels, and thou shalt set aside that which is full.
Matthew 5:1-3 (KJV) And seeing the multitudes, he went up into a mountain: and when he was set, his disciples came unto him:
And he opened his mouth, and taught them, saying,
Blessed are the poor in spirit: for their's is the kingdom of heaven.
Let's start by looking at what happened before chapter 5 of the book of Matthew, in order to see why there is a need to shut the door before pouring in the oil. The Bible was not originally divided into chapters. No need to get one person there who is shouting and saying, "Come and see this little bottle of oil filling many, many drums with oil!"
Let's see Matthew 4:24-25 (KJV)
And his fame went throughout all Syria: and they brought unto him all sick people that were taken with divers diseases and torments, and those which were possessed with devils, and those which were lunatick, and those that had the palsy; and he healed them.
And there followed him great multitudes of people from Galilee, and from Decapolis, and from Jerusalem, and from Judaea, and from beyond Jordan.
In this case (Mt 5:1-2) Jesus didn't close a physical door. No. He used an obstacle to separate those inside from those outside. He climbed a mountain. Only those not interested in stressing themselves for God in life dwell in the valley or place of comfort.
Look at the people who had opportunity to climb up but chose to rest, lie down, sit at ease or even sleep while Jesus was not feeding or healing them. Their interest in Christ is the food He provides. Their concern is their health. What is this climbing up again?
Mt 4:24-25 gives us those there with Jesus. Syrians were there. The place was like a hospital and like a market at the same time. People held their sick. Some carried theirs on their heads or in stretchers. Some were actively holding down their mad persons. The noise was much. Some were crying for joy that the Lord had turned their sorrow to joy. How I wish I see one of the days of the son of man.
In this bustle hustle, the Son of Man rose up and went uphill. Only those who had their eyes on Him, saw Him leave. Many had their eyes on their sick or healed relatives or friends. Some, however, saw Him leave. Very few men today have their eyes on Jesus. All disciples normally keep their eyes focused on Him. Disciples learn Jesus.
Others just learn His book or savour His miracles. The Bible says, "Look (at Him) and be saved (Is. 45:22). What is hard in looking? Yet some would rather not look. Those whose eyes were on Him, noticed this movement and followed Him. I don't know how high up He went nor do I know how rough the journey up.
It was a journey many didn't seem eager to make. He came to a place and sat down. Those following Him came there and sat with Him. He stared filling them from there in chapter 5 all the way to the end of chapter 7.
He filled them with new wine. The first beattitude was to confirm what they have done to be correct.
Mt 5:3 NLT “God blesses those who are poor and realize their need for him, for tare poor and realize their need for him, for the Kingdom of Heaven is theirs.
It's knowing our need for God that makes us pant after God. Being locked with God doesn't just happen. It happens to those that realize that they will not become anything really important without God.
Do you see what we are talking about? Is it clear to you enough to begin a regular time alone with God. Some call it quiet time. Others call it devotion. Jesus had it with early. It was so important to Him that He had it alone. He would leave people to sleep, if they like. It was His habit. Make it your habit too. Encourage others to make it their habit too.
