2 Kings 4:4 (KJV) And when thou art come in, thou shalt shut the door upon thee and upon thy sons, and shalt pour out into all those vessels, and thou shalt set aside that which is full.
Mk 9:2, 28-29 GNB Six days later Jesus took with him Peter, James, and John, and led them up a high mountain, where they were alone. As they looked on, a change came over Jesus, ... After Jesus had gone indoors, his disciples asked him privately, "Why couldn't we drive the spirit out?" "Only prayer can drive this kind out," answered Jesus; "nothing else can."
The Gospel is all about Christ and Him crucified (1 Cor. 2:2). All disciples learn Christ. Even when Jesus was fresh from the grave, He saw nothing more important to talk about than Himself - Christ. He called those brothers going to Emmaus fools because they were not understanding Him (Lk 24:27). He pointed out Himself from the scriptures, beginning from Moses and through the Prophets. I wish I can always do that.
Today we will look at their being with Him on one particular occasion. This event mentioned here in Mk 9:2-29 helps us to see that people really change in the place of prayers. Like Moses, our Master's appearance began to change as He tarried in prayer. How long did He pray? We cannot say. The apostles who ought to have given us reports were sleeping. Their being with Him, however, made them see a glipse of this transformation.
The more you are shut in with Christ, the more intimate experience you have of Him. There is a need to agree to be shut in with Him. Asking you to pray for many hours is not punishment. It's not limiting you. It's not a waste of time for a tree to take root.
.
Six days later does not mean that nothing happened between then and the last six days. It's just that the diary keeper or the writer, Mark, choose what is important to write and what to leave out.
No close disciples can ever fully tell you all his intimate experiences with his Lord. Many of them just write as much as possible just like Peter just mentioned this event in 2 Pt 1:16-18.
It was an experience even to say stupid things before the Master. Peter didn't know that Denominations are such terrible things in the sight of God. He experienced the quick reaction of God when he suggested two other ways to worship God. God came down, removed Moses and Elijah and made a pronouncement that the early Church leadership never put aside.
"...This is my beloved Son: hear him" (Mk 9:7; Mt 17:5).
The disciples looked around for Moses and for Elijah. They were nowhere to be found. What happened? Handing over has taken place. The shadow was over (Heb. 10:1; Col. 2:17) . Reality has come. Christ had been introduced.
What the scripture calls the shadow is similar to plans or drawings used in building. They are not of much use after the project is completed. The Old Testament was a shadow. Christ is the reality. All those preaching shadows to please take warning.
Even on their way from the Mount, there were discussions with the Master that ordinary men knew nothing about. That John was the Elijah that was to come was a mystery revealed to those apostles. It gave those men leadership edge. Let all promotions in the Church be based on the degree of revelation each person has. Of course the revelation ought to have caused transformation in the lives of the person thus favoured.
When they came down the Mountain, they met a problem. The father of the epileptic boy reported the failure of the remaining disciples (less Peter, James and John) to deliver his son from the demonic spirit. I don't know what would have happened if those from the Mount with Jesus were around.
It looked to me as if the disciples used to do deliverance in absence of Jesus. That is why I think that the presence of Peter, James and John might have forced that demon out.
Being with Him is wonderful. He was close to them. Even today, your being in discipleship would make you to be close to the Master. Closeness leads to better praying. They simply went to him and asked why they couldn't do deliverance this time.
He gave them two reasons. One was unbelieve (of the minister), not of the possessed. The second was lack of praying, especially with fasting.
Would you want to be shut with the Lord? Begin to have regular retreats. Give God one hour alone per day. Then strive to give God a full day per week. That can be the start of spiritual exercises. You will be surprised at the results.
